One To One Reading Program

ONE TO ONE Reading Program Update – Supporting Primary Students’ Success We are happy to report that for the last few months our school is taking part in a new primary literacy program. We are working in cooperation with a wonderful volunteer reading program called ONE TO ONE Literacy. While this program is new to our school, it has been around for over 25 years and is currently serving kids in over a hundred schools throughout BC! ONE TO ONE’s trained volunteer tutors work with students on an individual basis to increase their reading confidence and to practice their reading skills. The one-to-one reading sessions take place at school within the regular school day. Sessions occur once or twice a week and last around 30 minutes. Students have the opportunity to read in a relaxed environment where it is okay to take risks, make mistakes, and learn at their own pace. Students participating in this program were selected by their teachers. They were identified as students who would benefit from having extra reading practice to improve their reading fluency and other skills. Grade 2 students were selected as the target group. Giving our students an extra boost with their reading will help prepare them to meet the increased academic challenges they will be encountering in the classroom at this key learning stage. Currently we have three tutors and 12 students participating in the program and we are planning to expand the program to include Grade 3s in the near future.
